Chemical Peels

One of life’s pleasures is treating yourself to a professional facial. Raleigh-Durham residents visit The Skin Care and Laser Center of Central Dermatology in Chapel Hill for routine skin care to keep their faces looking fresh and youthful. Some clients opt for chemical peels, which slough off more layers of skin than a facial can.

Peel Away the Years

Chemical peels have been a part of professional skin care treatments for more than 100 years. In the hands of experienced professionals, chemical peels can be tailored to the specific needs of clients. By adjusting the strength of the chemical solution and how long it remains on the skin, our board-certified dermatologists can control the peel’s aggressiveness.

Chemical peels treat a range of cosmetic skin conditions, from mild discoloration to moderate wrinkles and scars, depending on how deeply the peel penetrates. There are 2 categories of peels:

Light – Sometimes called a superficial peel, a light peel penetrates only the skin’s outer layer for a gentle exfoliation. We will use glycolic acid, lactic acid, Jessner’s solution, salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in our superficial peels. A light peel is effective for improving mild discoloration, smoothing rough skin, and providing a refreshed look.

Medium – This will penetrate into the middle layer of the skin to remove damaged cells. Stronger solutions of glycolic acid and TCA are used to make age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and freckles appear less noticeable. A medium-depth peel requires 5 to 7 days recovery and strict sun protection. Medium peels are also used to tighten sun-damaged skin and remove some actinic keratoses.
