What Happens During Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional laser resurfacing is a procedure that penetrates the skin in a pattern of pinpoint channels of light rather than a solid beam. Before the development of fractional technology, laser resurfacing used broad-brush treatments that damaged healthy tissue surrounding the targeted areas.

Traditionally, 2 kinds of laser treatment have been available for cosmetic skin treatment: ablative and non-ablative.

Ablative laser treatments break the surface of the skin leaving the skin open and raw for a few days and can take 2 to 4 weeks to heal. These lasers have been considered the gold-standard for the treatment of acne scars and deeper wrinkles and are more commonly referred to as "laser resurfacing".

Non-ablative laser treatments penetrate the skin at various depths creating channels of ablated skin achieving improvement of fine lines, deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and melasma without the extensive downtime of ablative lasers. Non-ablative lasers have a shorter healing time and are typically performed in a series of multiple treatments.

Our Fractional Lasers

The non-ablative fractional resurfacing lasers we use are:

  • Fraxel Re:store DUAL® – An advancement in laser technology, the Fraxel DUAL® offers 2 wavelengths, 1550/1927, to restore and repair. It stimulates deeper collagen, improves the appearance of fine lines, treats hyperpigmentation & melasma, and is FDA cleared to treat actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions).
  • Nordlys®The Frax 1550/1940 is a fractional laser used to resurface and rejuvenate the skin. This technology delivers very small, controlled bursts of energy only to the area being treated to reduce textural irregularities and pigmentation. The heat produced, stimulates the dermis and the production of collagen.
