IPL Photofacial

Skin conditions ranging from age spots to redness are effectively treated with intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. IPL is non-invasive and is popular among patients who want something more than just a facial. Triangle residents visit The Skin Care and Laser Center of Central Dermatology in Chapel Hill and Central Dermatology Center in Cary for IPL photofacials, which rejuvenate the skin with little to no downtime.

Although IPL therapy is becoming a common service at day spas, it’s important to have a board-certified dermatologist oversee any laser or light skin treatment. Request an appointment or call us at (919) 493-3194 to schedule.

How IPL Works

IPL therapy is similar to laser treatment, but with some key differences. Laser treatments such as Fraxel® penetrate the skin with targeted, concentrated beams of light. IPL, on the other hand, uses many wavelengths and is non-invasive. The light pulsed into the skin targets hemoglobin to heat and coagulate unwanted superficial vessels and triggers pigment to present at the skin's surface. Once pigment is at the skin's surface it can slough off naturally over time giving the appearance of fading. The heat stimulates collagen and elastin production for rejuvenated, healthier skin with a better overall tone and complexion.

Conditions Treated

The number of treatments needed and how long each session lasts depends on the nature and severity of your skin condition. Most patients experience only slight discomfort during IPL therapy and don’t require any topical anesthesia.

  • Pigmented and vascular lesions – IPL is considered a safe and effective treatment for hyperpigmented or hypervascular lesions and scars. Patients getting IPL therapy should expect gradual improvement over approximately 3 to 5 treatments performed monthly.
  • Aging skin – A photofacial improves the appearance of skin damaged by years of sun exposure and brown spots that occur as we age. IPL evens out blotchy skin and may also increase skin elasticity by promoting collagen growth.
  • Rosacea – Rosy/red skin, telangiectasias, flushing of the cheeks, and pustular acne all see improvement with IPL treatments. A series of at least 3 treatments, approximately 4 weeks apart, is recommended for longer-lasting results. IPL treatments are not a cure for rosacea but when used in conjunction with medical dermatology management, can be extremely effective. IPL also reduces the episodes of flushing in the long-term.
  • Spider veins – IPL therapy is used to reduce the appearance of small veins.
