The FUT & FUE Methods of Hair Restoration

Here at Central Dermatology Center, Dr. Leeor Porges uses two hair transplant techniques, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

Hair transplant surgery is a cosmetic procedure to restore hair loss in both men and women. FUE and FUT are both hair transplant techniques that involve moving hair follicles from a donor area to a different location on the scalp. The main difference between the two is how the grafts are harvested. There is very little difference in the success rates of FUE and FUT.

  • FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation
Also known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS), this method involves removing a long strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, separating the follicles, and transplanting them. FUT is often used for larger transplants and may be a better option for patients with significant balding. The donor area is stitched closed and heals with a small linear scar.
  • The FUT small linear scar can be camouflaged with various methods including FUE or scalp micro pigmentation.

  • FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction
This modern method involves extracting individual hair follicles through small circular incisions in the donor area. FUE results in minimal scarring and faster healing than FUT. FUE is a good option for patients with minimal donor hair or who need a smaller number of grafts.

Other differences between FUT and FUE include:

FUE

  • Multiple small dot-shaped scars
  • No sutures
  • Requires shaving of the entire donor area
  • Procedure Time: 1-4 hours
  • Minimal post-op pain
  • Recovery Time: Typically less than FUT
  • Scarring is virtually undetectable
  • Higher Cost associated with treatment

FUT

  • Linear scar
  • Dissolvable sutures
  • Sutures covered by existing hair post-op
  • Procedure Time: 15-30 minutes
  • 2-3 days of post-op discomfort requiring pain medication
  • Recovery Time: Typically more than FUE
  • Scar visible with very short hair styles
  • Lower Cost associated with treatment

In the end, both methods of extraction provide excellent results for our hair transplant patients. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Porges and our hair restoration team at (919) 401-1994 x 5527 to further discuss which option may be best for you.
